Liberation: Using the Web

Liberation Help

This is the Liberation help page. To return to Liberation, use your browser's back button to get back to the last page you viewed, or select a starting point from the links above.

Browser Requirements

Liberation is written in valid XHTML 1.0 and should display without issues in modern browsers. These are the key requirements of Liberation:

Liberation uses a cookie to remember your chosen subject and your score in some of the exercises. Depending on your browser settings, you may be asked whether to accept the cookie. There's no danger in doing this and no personal information about you or your PC is involved. When you close your browser, the cookie is deleted. In Internet Explorer, a Privacy setting of Medium High or lower will work fine.

Liberation uses inline frames (iframes) to display Google search pages during exercises. If your browser doesn't support iframes (e.g. Netscape 4 or text browsers), you'll see a link you can use to visit the relevant page. You can then use your browser's back button to return to the original page.

Colours, fonts and page layouts are handled exclusively through CSS. All modern browsers should support this feature but there may be some problems with earlier versions of browsers such as Netscape 4 and IE 5. You can use the stylesheet switcher at the foot of each page to select from several styles. If your browser seems to be having problems, select None to skip CSS completely and use plain HTML.

The size of fonts in all Liberation styles is flexible; if you find the text on the page too small, use your browser to increase the size.

Support for switching stylesheets (at the bottom of the page) uses JavaScript. Liberation also supports browser selection of stylesheets if you are using a browser that supports this, such as Mozilla / Firefox. This feature is not supported in current versions of Internet Explorer (e.g. version 6), so to switch styles in IE JavaScript must be enabled. This doesn't affect the content of Liberation, it merely allows you to select the colour scheme and layout that suits you best.

If you experience problems using Liberation in your browser, please email nick.dimmock@northampton.ac.uk.
