Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

This box contains publications designed by Chermayeff and Geismar Associates, examples from Strathmore Paper, Champion Papers about printing sales, Company Publications about corporate communication and catalogues showcasing various products for Knoll. There is also a booklet about war-time aeroplanes, an exhibition booklet, two booklets about education in New York and a pamphlet about a film. The contents of this box were organised by Angela in one of a set of eight boxes, numbered 1-8. This box was number 3.

Item 1: Report and Studies in the History of Art 1969, 1970Add to your cart.
An A4 sized book with the title in red print on the cover with a black and white image of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den' - a Rubens painting. The book was produced by the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, USA. It was designed by Chermayeff & Geismar Associates. It features articles on topics related to art and the report for the fiscal year 1969.

Item 2: Mobil Graphics 3, 1972Add to your cart.
An A4 sized card booklet that folds out into three sections. On the front page is the title, the editor's note and some information about the 'No Smoking' signs developed by Mobil. Inside there is an explanation of the basic colour philosophy of the Mobil program. It is illustrated with colour pictures. The consultants for this publication were Chermayeff & Geismar Associates.

A spiral bound, square booklet with the Burlington logo on the front. The booklet contains guidelines about the size, colour and usage of the corporate mark. The mark was created by Chermayeff & Geismar Associates.

Item 4: Strathmore presents, 1973Add to your cart.
A small, square, bright green envelope addressed to Angela Reeves at Chermayeff & Geismar Associates. The envelope is franked 'Jan 26, '73, West Springfield, Mass.' On the back are the words 'Strathmore Paper Company. Westfield, Massachusetts 01085'. Inside the envelope is a bright orange booklet with these words printed in blue on the front: 'Strathmore presents the un-square electric invention.' Inside the booklet are three pieces of card, each a different fluorescent colour and each with a different sized square cut out of the middle. The back cover explains that this is demonstrating the new colour creations of Strathmore Paper. It also gives a list of the 'new generation of Strathmore text'.

Item 5: The Great Airplanes, [1970s]Add to your cart.
A small, square booklet with a cover made from woven material. The title page is the second page, and is black with the title in white lettering. The full title is, 'The Great Airplanes: Canvas creations of an exciting era (1914-1918)'. The next two pages have information about the famous planes and pilots of the First World War. The rest of the pages are black and white photographs of some of the planes mentioned. The last page has eight small photographs in squares, surrounding another square with these words printed in it, 'Rapoport Printing  Corporation has presented The Great Airplanes - Canvas creations of an exciting era - This is one of a series'.

Item 6: Excerpts from Puddenhead Wilson's Calendar by Mark Twain, 1984Add to your cart.
A brown, square card folder, between A4 and A5 size, with a square cut out of the middle with a photograph of Mark Twain seen through the hole. The title appears above the hole and below it are the words, 'Presented on Rhododendron Text & Cover by Strathmore'. Inside are seven pieces of card/paper, each with a different quote from Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead and a picture. Each piece is showing an example of the paper and card that Strathmore have produced in the Rhododendron range. The last of the seven pages has information about the booklet, the paper and its technical details.

Item 7: Champion Papers 31, 1972Add to your cart.
An A4 white booklet, full title: 'Champion Papers. The Printing Salesman's Herald. Book 31'. Below the title is a large grid, each square with a letter in it, spelling out 'Champion Papers 31'. In the square with the '3', there is a picture of a herald. After an introduction about sales strategies, every page gives a different tip about competing for sales in the printing industry. Every page also has a letter from the title, printed in a square, in bright colours. The last page has six quotes about various aspects of selling, advertising and business, and on the reverse is information about the production of the booklet, for example the designer, Michael Schacht.

An A4 booklet with the full title: 'Champion Papers. The Printing Salesman's Herald'. Inside the full size pages are close-up photographs of paper. Sandwiched in between these pages are smaller booklets that have text inside. Each of the booklets presents a different philosophy or viewpoint on the best strategies in the printing sales business.

Item 9: Champion Papers 32, 1973Add to your cart.
A brown A4 envelope addressed to Angela Reeves at Chermayeff & Geismar Assoc. The front of the envelope has a picture of a herald's face and bugle and the title of the contents - 'Champion Papers. The Printing Salesman's Herald. Book 32'. On the back of the envelope are the addresses of the recipient and the sender. Inside the envelope is a booklet, A4 size, landscape. It is made of brightly coloured pages, which have been cut to make an asymmetric design. Each page has text on it, written by a different professional of the graphic arts industry about what they look for in terms of a printing salesman. Also in the envelope is an A1 sized yellow poster. On one side is the company's logo of the herald. On the other side is a cross section of America's most successful women art directors and designers talking about the most important quality they look for in their printing suppliers, positively and negatively. There is a photograph of each woman and a short biography.

An A4 booklet with a photograph of lots of other booklets on the front and the full title, 'The Company Publication. One of a Warren Series on Corporate Communication'. After an introduction, the following pages contain examples of what six firms were doing to communicate through company publications. It discusses the purposes and benefits of company publications and the vital role they play in the communication framework of business. 'Producing the Company Publication', item 11, accompanies this volume.

An A4 booklet with a photograph of lots of other booklets on the front and the full title, 'Producing the Company Publication. One of a Warren Series on Corporate Communication'. This booklet examines the content of external and internal publications and those that are a combination of both. It also presents ideas relative to the purpose role, audience, staff, format, writing, production and readership of company publications. 'The Company Publication', item 10, accompanies this volume.

Item 12: Omniplan, [1970s]Add to your cart.
A large square booklet with a dark blue cover and a design on the front of white squares. Inside is information about the Texan company Omniplan, which is an environmental service and development corporation, offering services in architecture, design, engineering, development and planning, whilst solving related environmental problems. The majority of the booklet contains photographs of various scenes related to the environment and to architecture.

Item 13: Using Walls (Outdoors), 1970Add to your cart.
A large square booklet with a black and white photograph of a painted wall on the cover. The booklet accompanies an exhibition held at The Jewish Museum in New York and May and June, 1970. The exhibition was mainly of work by City Walls Inc. and Smokehouse Associates, the two groups of professional artists in New York who paint outdoor walls. The booklet contains black and white photographs of some of their work and some writing by members of the companies and the Museum.

Item 15: The Mangiarotti Marbles, 1968Add to your cart.
An A4 catalogue of a collection of marble bowls and ashtrays by designer Angelo Mangiarotti, for Knoll Associates. The booklet folds out into three pages and has a large photograph inside of the range of marbles. The back cover has the information about the dimensions of the marbles and some details about the designer.

An A4 booklet showing the Albison Chair, designed by Don Albison for Knoll Associates Inc. The first page gives a little information about the designer and his product. Item 18: Harmony on Third Street, 1969Add to your cart.
A booklet about A4 size with a black and white photo on the front cover of a traffic light and a street sign of 'E 3 st'. The booklet was produced for the 75th anniversary of Third Street, the first music settlement house in the US. It contains black and white photographs of the children who studied there and text telling the story of the school.

An A5 sized pamphlet that is a booking form for film. The title is on the front cover, which has a silhouetted picture of a wheat crop on it. At the bottom of the cover are the words, 'A film from The Flour Advisory Bureau'. Inside is some information about bread, the conditions under which the film is loaned and the film booking form.

Item 20: Public Education in New York City, 1969Add to your cart.
A4 width square booklet with a blue cover and the title printed in black in the centre of the cover. Inside is a foreword explaining that this is a study researched by the First National City Bank's Public Affairs Committee. It inquired into various aspects of public education in New York City. It is broken down into subsections and contains many black and white photographs of schools and school children.
