Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

Box 21: Portfolio containing examples of Angela's work, 1962-1996

A black, plastic, portfolio containing examples of Angela's work dating from 1962 through to 1996. The portfolio has plastic pockets which have been filled with examples of Angela’s work. Most of the examples have been mounted on to black A3 sized paper, before being inserted into the plastic pockets of the portfolio. Examples of work for British European Airways, Ilford, Kew Gardens, Prudential Assurance and Royal Mail are all included within the portfolio. Further sheets of black paper, with examples of work attached, are loose inside the front cover. Other papers, including some correspondence, were inserted in to a pocket in the inside of the portfolio's back cover when the collection was originally received by the University of Northampton. These papers are now contained in a separate box - AR/01/Gra/035

Item 1: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - Postcard, 1990

A black sheet of paper with the design for a postcard, headed Kew Gardens 1840-1990 and containing a brief history of Kew Gardens attached to it. The design for both the front and back views are on the page, drawn in pencil on tracing paper which has been wrapped around pieces of card. The design is part of a project, for Royal Mail to commemorate 150th anniversary of Kew Gardens. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens.

Item 2: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - First Day Cover, 1990

A black sheet of paper with the design for the first day cover of a set of stamps to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Kew Gardens attached to it. The design is drawn on to tracing paper with a picture of trees attached to the left hand side. A piece of plastic with the words ‘Kew Gardens 1840-1990 Royal Mail First Day Cover’ in white lettering written on it is laid over the design. The lettering is positioned so that it fits across the bottom of the picture. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens.

Item 3: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - First Day Cover, 1990

The final version of a first day cover envelope, complete with a franked set of stamps, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Kew Gardens. There are four stamps, each one depicting a different type of tree with one of Kew Garden’s buildings behind it. The value of the stamps is 20p, 29p, 34p and 37p. A sheet of black paper provides the mount for this work. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens.

Item 4: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - Postcard, 1990

The final version of a postcard which was designed and produced to give a brief description of the Kew Gardens 150th anniversary commemorative stamps and the work carried out by the institution. Mounted on sheet of black paper front of the card has a drawing of the main gates at Kew and on the reverse are details about how to become a member of the British Philatelic Bureau or the young collectors Bug Club. Angela is credited, on the front of the postcard, with the design of the cover and was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project.

Item 5: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - Royal Mail Mint Stamps, 1990

A set of the Kew Gardens commemorative stamps mounted on a piece of black card and protected by a sheet of plastic. The stamps are accompanied by an A4 card folded around them, which contains information about and pictures of the gardens, to form a pack. Angela is credited with designing the pack which is numbered 208 and is contained in a plastic sleeve that is mounted on to a sheet of black paper. The words ‘Kew Gardens 1840-1990 Royal Mail Mint Stamps’ in white lettering give the pack its name. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens.

Item 6: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - Leaflet, 1990

A black sheet of paper with an information leaflet, printed on to white card, about Kew Gardens attached to it. The leaflet forms one side of the folded A4 card which is included in the ‘Kew Gardens 1840-1990 Royal Mail Mint Stamps’ pack. Entitled ‘By saving plants we save ourselves’ the leaflet gives a brief overview of the work undertaken at Kew and a description of each of the four commemorative stamps. Pictures of some of the buildings and trees to be found at Kew decorate the margins of the page. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens .

Item 7: Kew Gardens 1840-1990 - Leaflet, 1990

A black sheet of paper with one side of the information leaflet included in the ‘Kew Gardens 1840-1990 Royal Mail Mint Stamps’ pack mounted on to it. The leaflet is divided into three distinct parts. The first part forms the title for the pack, which is written using white lettering across a picture of tree tops. ‘An Intrepid Spirit’ is the title for the second part, which when folded, forms the back cover for the pack. This part briefly mentions Marianne North, 1830-1890, who traveled all over the world painting flowers and whose work is housed in a building at Kew. The final part of the leaflet has the title ‘A Momentous Mission’ and a short paragraph, above a picture of the Palm House, talks about the scientific role carried out at Kew. Angela was working for Royal Mail National as a Design and Editorial Manager at the time that she worked on this project for Kew Gardens.

A business card for, Chris Cullum, the Managing Director of a company called Cullum Litho Limited. The name and title of the Managing Director are at the centre top of the card, above the company logo and address. Mounted on a sheet of black paper the card is white with black lettering with the colours blue, orange and yellow used in the logo. A letter headed sheet of paper and a compliments slip are mounted on to the same sheet of black paper.

Item 15: Book Cover - Postal Reform and the Penny Black, 1990

A black sheet of paper with the design for a book cover attached to it. The book jacket is for a book called ‘Postal Reform and the Penny Black: a new appreciation’ by Douglas N. Muir. The title details of the book are printed in black lettering, with the sub-title in red, on a grey background. Below the title details is a picture of a silver coin showing the head of Queen Victoria above a picture of a Penny Black stamp. Douglas N. Muir was the Curator, Philately at the National Postal Museum and in his book offers a new insight in to the period leading up to the issue of the Penny Black and the Mulready covers in 1840. Published in 1990 the book has the ISBN 0 9515948 0 X . Angela was working as Design and Editorial Manager at Royal Mail National when this book was published.

A black sheet of paper with pages from appendices two and three of the book ‘Postal Reform and the Penny Black: a new appreciation’ by Douglas N. Muir attached to it. Pages 215-216 and 225-226 are mounted on to a sheet of black paper next to each other. Appendix three is a list of post towns in Great Britain and Ireland while appendix two appears to be a register of entries in a Treasury Competition. The book was published in 1990 and at this time Angela was working as Design and Editorial Manager at Royal Mail National.

An invitation to the London College of Printing annual distribution of awards which will be taking place on Tuesday 17th March and Thursday 19th March, 1964 for the 1962-3 session. The coat of arms for the College appears at the top and to the right hand side of the invitation above the words ‘London College of Printing annual distribution of awards’ stretching across the width of the card. London College of Printing is in blue lettering with the rest of the text and the coat of arms in grey. Because of the number of awards to be presented the ceremony will be carried out over two evenings. The details of which awards will be presented on which evening are printed on the reverse of the invitation. Angela was a student at the London College of Printing from 1962-1964 where she studied for the National Diploma in Design. While at the College she won the Walter Neurath Prize.

A ‘test certificate’ designed for The Cement Marketing Company Limited, a member of the Blue Circle Group. The logo, a blue circle, for the Blue Circle Group appears in the top left hand corner of the certificate with the company name and address printed, using blue lettering, in the top right hand corner. ‘Test certificate’ and the words ‘'Sulfacrete’ Sulphate resisting Cement’ are printed, using orange lettering, below the company name. The reverse of the certificate has an abstract from the British Standard Specification 4027:1966 for Sulphate-resisting Cement printed on it. This item is mounted on an A3 sized sheet of black paper, together with a second test certificate, and is inserted in to a plastic pocket contained in the portfolio.
