Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

Examples of work relating to Angela's time at the Royal Mail, Design Research Unit, British Airways and Chermayeff and Geismar are contained in this box. There are also letters from the Open University a drawing and several magazine cuttings. The items now contained in boxes 12, 13 and 14 were packaged together when the collection was received by the University of Northampton.

Item 1: Royal Mail Special Stamps 1984, 1984Add to your cart.
A black hard covered book entitled Royal Mail Special Stamps 1984. The title is engraved in silver lettering which is enclosed in a silver square stamped onto the centre of the front cover. Inside the front cover of the book is a sealed envelope containing the stamps that are illustrated in the book. A space at the top of the pages has been designed for the stamps to fit into. The subjects depicted on the stamps are heraldry, cattle, urban renewal, the 25th anniversary of the European parliament, the London economic summit, the Greenwich meridian, Royal Mail, the British Council and the Christmas stamps. A white cardboard pocket with the title shown on a stamp encases the book. At the time this book was published Angela was working at the Royal Mail as the Design and Editorial Manager.

Item 2: The Story of Greeting Stamps, 1994Add to your cart.
A book about the process by which the design of Royal Mail Greetings Stamps has evolved following the initial research into the idea. The cover of the book is made from white card folded around the pages in the form of an envelope. The word ‘Greetings’ is written across ten sky coloured stamps by an aeroplane at the top of the front cover with the title ‘The Story of Greetings Stamps’ in black lettering underneath and to the right-hand side. Inside the back cover there is a sheet of greetings labels and inside the front cover a postcard from Lynn and Brian to Angela. The postcard, which was produced in commemoration of sixty years of passenger service for London for the London Transport Museum, is suggesting that the book has won a Donside silver award. November 9th 1994 is the date the postcard was written. At the time this book was published Angela was working for Royal Mail National as the Design and Editorial Manager.

Item 3: The Royal Mail Stamp Advisory Committee - First Review, 1993Add to your cart.
A book, published by the Royal Mail, which gives recognition to the contribution of the Stamp Advisory Committee in the design process of British postage stamps. Each stamp that was produced in 1992 is pictured and reviewed with details of changes made during the production process. Designs included commemorative stamps for the fortieth anniversary of the accession,  the centenary of Tennyson’s death, Europa ’92, the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Edgehill which marked the start of the English Civil War, the works of Gilbert and Sullivan and the single European market.  At the time the book was published Angela was working as Design and Editorial Manager for Royal Mail National.

Item 4: Designing over four decades - Chermayeff and Geismar Inc., [2003]Add to your cart.
A pamphlet which charts the history of the Chermayeff and Geismar company over more than forty years of its existence. Examples of the company’s design work for well known clients are pictured above a very brief description of year by year events in the company’s history. With the title in white lettering on a red cover the pamphlet is folded concertina style and covers the years 1957-2003. Angela appears in a 1998 photo with the caption ‘C&G partners and associates’. Angela worked for Chermayeff and Geismar Inc between 1969 and 1973 and returned to the company in 1996. The pamphlet is contained along with a second one in a cream (pale beige) envelope.

Item 5: Clients Projects Expertise - Chermayeff and Geismar Inc., [2003]Add to your cart.
A pamphlet entitled Chermayeff and Geismar Inc.: Clients Projects Expertise in white, yellow red and green lettering on a blue background. Inside, examples of the work of the company are depicted under the headings identity, signage and wayfinding, environmental art, print communications, web and motion graphics and exhibits. On the back cover is a short description of the firm, in white lettering, describing its’ achievements over more than forty years in the design industry. Angela worked for Chermayeff and Geismar Inc between 1969 and 1973 returned to the company in 1996. The pamphlet is contained along with a second one in a cream (pale beige) envelope.

A Royal Mail Stamp Card addressed to Angela from Jean and Crawford wishing her a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The stamps featured show a snowman, Father Christmas a reindeer and a Christmas tree. Produced for Christmas 2006 the card is date stamped ‘First Day of Issue Bethlehem Llandeilo 7-11-2006 and is enclosed in a sealed plastic envelope.

A colour photograph taken of a stand for the Torin Company at a trade exhibition. The name of the company on the stand appears as ‘Torin Nivelles / Belgien and the words with the exhibits appear to be written in German. Attached to the back of the photograph is a black and white picture, taken from a slightly different angle, of the same stand. This picture has been cut out from a magazine or promotional leaflet.

Item 11: Royal Mail - Penny Black and the uniform post 150th anniversary, 1990Add to your cart.
A card presentation pack containing a miniature sheet depicting a replica of the Penny Black and one of the stamps issued in January 1990 and a silver coin. The miniature sheet was produced to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first postage stamp, issued on 6th May 1840, and the introduction of the uniform post, while the coin has been produced to commemorate the new Royal Mail identity being introduced nationally from 1990. One side of the coin is stamped with the new Royal Mail logo and the words ‘Royal Mail new identity 1990’ and on the other side a Penny Black and the words ‘6th May 1840 6th May 1990’. On the front of the pack there are a few words from Bill Cockburn, Managing Director of Royal Mail and printed on the back is the Royal Mail Business Mission. Each member of the Royal Mail team was given one of the commemorative packs. At the time that this commemorative pack was created Angela was working for Royal Mail National as the Design and Editorial Manager.

A professional group of architects designers and technicians came together to form the Design Research Unit. Angela worked for the unit between 1965 and 1967 as an Assistant Designer.

A poster showing how the British Airways corporate identity should be used across the different business categories that make up the company. A note in the top right hand corner states that full details are available in the Corporate Identification Manual or from the Design and Advertising Production Manager, British Airways Travel Division, West London Terminal, London SW7 4ED. Angela worked for British Airways, as an Assistant Designer, from 1964 until 1965. While at British Airways she ‘designed print’ using the company’s existing Design Standards Manual.

The poster has various coloured roses down the two sides and along the bottom with the title, ‘Everything’s coming up Roses’, and the details of the promotion in the central space. Hand written notes concerning the type face to be used appear around the title.

An article with the page numbers 30-33 and entitled ‘Have you or Have you not?’ The article has been clipped from a magazine and asks whether or not the reader has £7,865. If the money is no object the reader is asked to turn the page for details and if the money is a problem the reader is advised to read pages 42-47 first or take a deep breath.
