Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

This box contains ephemera relating to the Wynkyn de Worde Society. Ephemera relating to Angela Reeves' death and funeral. A sketchbook of Angela's, a photo of her and an autograph book. Some examples of the plain stamping technique. Commemorative memorabilia from several different individuals and companies. Utopian Papers. Related to box 8, which has more of the Utopian Papers. The contents of this box were packaged in the same container as  box 11 when the collection was received by the University of Northampton.

Item 1: The making of the memorial slate to Wynkyn de Worde, 2007Add to your cart.
An A3 folded card showing step by step the making of a memorial slate to Wynkyn de Worde at St. Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London. The slate was made by the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Wynkyn de Worde Society on 15th November 2007. The plaque reads: 'Wynkyn de Worde was the first printer in Fleet Street Died 1535' and has a picture of a sun, in laid with gold-leaf.

Item 2: A dinner menu, 2007Add to your cart.
A menu for the dinner held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Wynkyn de Worde Society. The dinner was held in Stationer’s Hall on 15th November, 2007. The outer cover of the menu is decorated with a water colour painting, depicting balloons. On the back of the menu, one says '50th Birthday' and another has a representation of the sun, which is the symbol for the Society. Inside the menu is a water colour of people standing around in groups chatting and drinking glasses of wine, above which is written the food courses.

Item 3: Thank you card for the Wynkyn de Worde memorial plaque funds, 2007Add to your cart.
A card headed ‘The memorial plaque to Wynkyn de Worde in St. Bride’s Church Fleet Street’ which is thanking members of the society for their fundraising efforts. The cost of the plaque erected in celebration of the Wynkyn de Worde Society’s 50th anniversary was met from three strands of fundraising within the society. There was an appeal to members for donations, the sale to members of rubbings from the slate and an appeal for appropriate items to be donated for auction at an evening exhibition. Inside the card the members who contributed are listed. The back cover shows a photograph of the plaque.

Item 4: The dedication of a plaque commemorating Wynkyn de Worde, 2007Add to your cart.
A booklet containing the order of service for the dedication of the slate plaque, Commissioned by the Wynkyn de Worde Society, in commemoration of Wynkyn de Worde at St. Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London. The service took place on 15th November 2007.

Item 5: Book Design: a few quotations from the masters of typography, 2007Add to your cart.
A small book entitled ‘Book Design: a few quotations from the masters of typography on lettering, typefaces, self-effacement, philosophy and love’. The cover is white with the title details in black lettering inside a black border. Beneath the title is a representation, in a yellow outline, of the design used on the plaque to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Wynkyn de Worde Society. A transparent paper cover is folded over the book which was compiled by Geoff Green for the Wynkyn de Worde Society in 2007 for its anniversary celebration.

In our own words: The Wynkyn de Worde Society 1957-2007 is a small book covered with a soft blue card cover. The title is in black lettering with a replica of the design from the plaque, made to celebrate fifty years of the Wynkyn de Worde Society, below it in gold. Written as a keepsake for the fiftieth anniversary of the society the book contains a selection of extracts from a bigger oral history project about the society.

The booklet ‘Forty Years on: the Wynkyn de Worde Society 1957-1997 plus 10 a supplement for the years 1998-2007’ was compiled for the fiftieth anniversary of the society and gives a brief history of its ten years between 1998 and 2007. A picture on the back of the booklet shows the top table at the celebration dinner held at Stationer’s Hall on 15th November 2007.

Item 8: Collection of drawings by George Hardie book, 1993Add to your cart.
A limited edition book, bound with string, containing a collection of drawings by George Hardie. The drawings have been used in his work over a twenty five year period and are presented in trade catalogue form. Signed by George Hardie and numbered 1/1000 the book was published in January 1993 to coincide with ‘George Hardie Works: Twenty-five years of Jobbing Illustration’, a travelling exhibition organised by the University of Brighton Gallery. Inside the booklet is a bookmark style card that has a thank you note on it by George and some information about the booklet. There is a little tab that was glued to the book that says 'also available in other colours'.

A card thanking all of Angela's family and friends for all the messages after her death and for being at her funeral and memorial service. It is a single piece of card and has an 'A' in an ornate box printed on it, with the dates 1942 and 2008. It came in an A4 plastic wallet accompanied by an invitation to Angela's funeral and memorial, an obituary for Angela from the Wynkyn de Worde Society, and an issue of the British Philatelic Bulletin, which also contains an obituary.

Item 10: Funeral invitation, 2008Add to your cart.
A folded A5 card printed, on the front,  with a decorative 'A' and the words ‘Angela Clement Reeves also known as Angela Coysten. Born: 31st August 1942, New York City, NY Died: 27th July 2008, at home, Stroud, Glos’. Inside the card has the details of Angela’s burial to take place in Norfolk and of her memorial event to take place in Stroud. On the back of the card friends and family are asked to R.S.V.P. to Camilla Hale, Angela’s sister. It came in a plastic A4 wallet accompanied by a thank you card, an obituary for Angela from the Wynkyn de Worde Society and an issue of the British Philatelic Bulletin, which also contains an obituary.

Item 11: British Philatelic Bulletin, 2008Add to your cart.
A complete issue of the British Philatelic Bulletin, vol.46, no.1, September 2008 which has an obituary to Angela, with a picture, on page 11. Angela worked in the Royal Mail’s Stamp Design Team during the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a paragraph  by Jeffery Matthews, with whom Angela worked from the mid 1980s to mid 1990s. He talks particularly about her 'acute colour sense'. It came in an A4 plastic wallet accompanied by a thank you card, an invitation to Angela's funeral and memorial and an obituary for Angela from the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

An A3 size publication, folded in four to A5 size,  from the Wynkyn de Worde Society. The publication contains an obituary to Angela who became a member of the society in 1982. It came in an A4 plastic wallet, accompanied by a thank you card, an invitation to Angela's funeral and memorial and a copy of the British Philatelic Bulletin, which also contains an obituary.

A spiral bound sketch book full of drawings created by Angela and submitted as part of a Typography exam in 1964. On the front of the sketch book a label reads ‘Label 7, Examinations in Art, 1964, Evidence of Study, Centre Number 96, Examination Number 2611, Examination National Dip Des, Craft Typography’. Most of the sketches are in ink and many are of people and buildings.

Item 15: Royal Coat of Arms example, [1965-1975]Add to your cart.
An example Coat of Arms that was engraved and embossed by W.R. Royle and Son for the cover of a Royal Luncheon Menu. On the cover of the A4 card there is a picture of a rubbing of the coat of arms. There are handwritten notes in pencil around the picture, as if in a stage of design. This writing has been printed on the page, rather than written on. Inside the card the coat of arms has been embossed onto the page, with a short explanation below. It is accompanied by an information sheet from W R Royle and Son Limited about Die-stamping, and an example of the technique as a letter-heading, by the same company.

Item 16: Example of plain stamping, [1965-1975]Add to your cart.
An example of a letter-heading using the 'plain stamping in high relief' technique, which shows an eagle as it is about to land. Above this is a short line of embossed text, possibly in some sort of Far Eastern writing. It is embossed on British Supremacy paper. It came as an example with an information sheet from W R Royle and Son Limited about Die-stamping, and an example of the Royal Coat of Arms engraved and embossed by the same company.
Condition: Good, but top left corner slightly bent and a couple of marks on the front.

Item 17: Plain stamping information sheet, [1965-1975]Add to your cart.
An information sheet produced by W.R. Royle and Son Limited entitled ‘Die-stamping Information Sheet 3: plain stamping in high relief’. The sheet has a photograph of a stamp being prepared by hand, below which is some information about the process. Embossed in the top right-hand corner is the name 'Royle'. The stamp in the photograph is the Royal Coat of Arms. Accompanying the information sheet is an example of this coat of arms and another example of the plain stamping technique in the form of a letter-heading.

Item 18: The partners: a potted history, 1992Add to your cart.
A small brown cardboard box containing a small booklet entitled ‘The Partners: a potted history’ and beneath the booklet a broken piece of pottery. The front and back covers of the booklet picture two sides of a ‘loving cup’ with a hammer also pictured on the back cover. This cup was made to commemorate the ninth anniversary of The Partners, and then smashed, with a piece of the broken pottery going to everyone involved in the company. Designs on the front of the cup showed the formation, growth and success of the company whilst the design on the back depicted the work force, as explained in the booklet which is illustrated by George Hardie with text by Beryl McAlhone. Malcolm Kennard was responsible for the pottery cup. On the last page of the booklet is the inscription 'Best Wishes, Shaun'.  The cardboard box is addressed to Angela Reeves, Royal Mail Stamps and Philately, 76-86 Turnmill Street, London EC1M 5NS and the stamp is franked 14th October 1992.

Item 19: Kenneth Clark - Five speeches, 1956Add to your cart.
A hard backed booklet, folded as a concertina, entitled ‘Five Speeches’ by Sir Kenneth Clark. The booklet is of an address given by Sir Kenneth Clark at the Royal College of Art Convocation in 1956. Sir Kenneth was a senior fellow of the College. Illustrations, cut in linoleum, by John Griffiths are printed on the back of each page of the booklet.

A blue covered, hard bound, autograph/farewell book signed by Angela’s colleagues at the BBC at the time of her move to the Royal Mail. As well as the usual good luck messages the book contains a number of jokes about ‘stamping your authority’ or ‘licking problems’ and of course ‘Buzby’. There are some loose pages at the back of the book with more farewell messages on them.

Item 21: Penny Black 150th Anniversary presentation set, 1990Add to your cart.
A black covered, booklet style, folder with the words ‘150th Anniversary of the Penny Black’ in silver lettering on the front cover. Inside the left hand cover there is a print of a penny black next to the black, 20p stamp, from 1990, alongside a picture of Britannia. Below the picture of the stamps are the words ‘One Pound’ and at the very bottom are the years 1840-1990. On the inside of the back cover is a silver coin with Queen Victoria’s head on the back and Britannia on the front. The words around the queen’s head on the back of the coin read ‘150th Anniversary of the Penny Black 1990’. Angela worked on the design of a book entitled 'Postal Reform and the Penny Black', by Douglas Muir, in 1990.

Item 22: Iris flowering, 1991Add to your cart.
A black cardboard box containing six colour photographs in white card frames, of an iris coming into bloom taken by Tony Evans. There are three finely printed pages (title, technical details and epigraph - a poem by Georgia O'Keefe), a black envelope labelled Addenda and a full size black and white print of one of the photos. The envelope contains an A5 booklet entitled 'Curriculum Vitae: Tony Evans', information about the price of the photographs, an order form and a list of the supplier's, designer's and printer's names and addresses. The black and white print has a stamp on it saying 'To visualize the full size of the limited edition print please unfold this sheet'. The collection of photographs is embossed with the words ‘One Quarter Size, Facsimile Edition’. A sheet of paper is hand written with the words ‘For Angela, Season’s Greetings and all the best for 1992, Tony, Christmas 1991’. In the top left hand corner of the page is a quote from poet and artist William Morris. It is from Tony Evans of the Penbryn Press. A wrapper of black paper encloses the box and was sealed with an iris decorated round sticker.

'People and the Art of Vehicle Manufacturing', by John Towers CBE, was the title of a talk he gave at Newell and Sorrell on the 25th April 1996.
