Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

The box contains some catalogues and portfolios of graphic and fashion design and some Utopian Papers publications, which are transcripts of speeches. The contents of this box were packaged in the same container as  box 9 when the collection was received by the University of Northampton.

Item 1: Eagles Eye: a new perspective, 1997Add to your cart.
A spiral bound copy of the Eagle's Eye catalogue for 1997, entitled ‘Eagles Eye: a new perspective’. The catalogue concentrates on ‘classic options for classic lifestyles’ in design for ladies and children. Isabella Rossellini is the model for the ladies' clothes. There is a piece of paper attached inside the back cover that  is titled '1997 Eagle Eye catalog production notes' that details such things as the designer, typeface and materials used for the cover.

'In the Blood', by professor Steve Jones, was the subject of a talk he gave at Newell and Sorrell in March, 1996. It was part of the Utopian Nights programme of inspirational talks, created by Newell and Sorrell, a leading identity and design consultancy. At the end of the book are the questions from the audience and answers from the speaker. This publication is number 1 in The Utopian Papers series of publications. A letter introducing the Utopian Papers, from Newell and Sorrell, accompanies the book. It is dated 25/03/1996 and is addressed to Angela Reeves at the Royal Mail, London.

A letter addressed to Angela Reeves at the Royal Mail, London, from John Simmons, of Newell and Sorrell, introducing the first Utopian Paper. It says that a new paper will be published following each new talk in Newell and Sorrell’s Utopian Nights programme. The series of talks began in 1989 and are held in the company’s offices in Utopia Village. This letter accompanies the 1st Utopian Paper ‘In the Blood’ by Professor Steve Jones.

The Corporate Smile: Celebrating 50 Utopian Nights was issued on 11th December 1998. This publication recalls many of the funny moments from the previous fifty Utopian Nights and is number 11 in The Utopian Papers series of publications. It is accompanied by a Christmas card from John and Frances. Johnny Vegas / The Nimmo Twins / Tommy Tiernan performed at the fiftieth Utopian Night.

A book entitled ‘Utopian Nights: A unique collection of inspirational talks at Newell and Sorrell’ was published in 1996. The book has an introduction by John Sorrell, of Newell and Sorrell, and is a collection of nearly all of the talks given by invited speakers at the company between 1989 and 1995, as part of the Utopian Nights programme. Item 9: Technics and creativity, 1971Add to your cart.
A white plastic box containing a book on one side and a palette of 3 paints below a drawing of a target with  ‘Target 1970’ and Jasper Johns signature below it on the other side. A slip of printed paper tells us that the box and the publication were produced in conjunction with the Technics and Creativity: Gemini G.E.L. exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Selected prints and multiples by leading artists such as Josef Albers, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella, published by Gemini at their workshop in California, make up the exhibition. The box contains a catalogue with 364 illustrations, an essayby riva Castleman and a catlogue of raisonne of Gemini's complete production. It also says that a multiple by Jasper Johns is included, although this seems to be missing.

Item 10: Book - Edward Burrett and the Penmiel Press, 1995Add to your cart.View associated digital content.
A signed, copy of the book ‘Edward Burrett and the Penmiel Press’ which was published by the Society of Typographic Designers in tribute to Edward Burrett. Mr. Burrett was a founder member of the British Typographers’ Guild (which later became the Society of Typographic Designers) in 1928 and started his own printing press (Penmiel) at his home in the 1960s. The book gives a history of Edward Burrett’s life and contains photographs of some of his work as well as tributes from people who knew him. A tribute from Angela appears on page 29. A letter dated 6th November, 1995 from the Gaillet Press is inside the front cover of the book  together with an order form for further copies if they are required.

A letter and order form that accompanies the signed, copy of the book ‘Edward Burrett and the Penmiel Press’ which was published by the Society of Typographic Designers in tribute to Edward Burrett. The letter is dated 6th  November 1995 and is a handwritten note to say to Angela Reeves that the book is for her, though it's 18 months behind schedule and that the order form is also enclosed. It is signed 'yours sincerely, Jeremy Irwin' who was the director of Gaillet Press, the publisher of the book.

Item 12: A portfolio by John Thirsk, 1983Add to your cart.
Published by Offshoot Publications in conjunction with Croft and Co., this is a series of twelve illustrations by John Thirsk depicting the history of the Port industry in Portugal. The Croft company has been established since 1678 and a front sheet gives brief history of how the Port producing family company became established in Portugal. A sheet at the back gives details about the illustrations which are enclosed in a folder which in turn fits in to a cardboard envelope. The envelope was stuck down with a sticker that reads 'Vinho do porto 1983 garantia' on one side and 'Instituto do vinho do porto' on the other.

Item 13: Silk Pearce Graphic Designers, [1990s]Add to your cart.
A design catalogue showing examples of the work carried out by the graphic designers at Silk Pearce. The brochure has a blue cover with the title printed in yellow lettering. An introduction is printed inside the front cover of the catalogue on yellow paper, which forms a small booklet in itself. There is also one attached to the inside of the back cover where the introduction is repeated in different languages, including French and German.

‘Building Design Partnership: Expressing Corporate Personality’ is one of a series of books published by Edizioni Tecno to promote excellence in architecture and design. The book looks at seven corporate clients of the Building Design Partnership (BDP) at the way they perceive themselves and at the way in which the designers perceived them. In side the book is an invitation to the private viewing of the exhibition ‘Expressing Corporate Personality’.
