Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

Two of the journal issues are designed by Angela Reeves. The contents of this box were packaged in the same container as  box 6 when the collection was received by the University of Northampton.

Item 1: 'Monotype' Display Faces, [1980s]Add to your cart.
An A-4 size card covered booklet with a picture of a press holding the title letters, as well as 'Registered Trade Mark - Monotype', ready to be printed. The booklet is a catalogue of the display fonts available from the Monotype Corporation. Each font is displayed in the full alphabet.

Item 2: Scientific copyfitting, [1980s]Add to your cart.
An A-4 size, soft back book, landscape orientated. The title is 'Scientific Copyfitting for 'Monotype' & 'monophoto' machines'. The front cover is white with the letters of the alphabet printed in grey. The booklet is produced by the Monotype Corporation and details how to choose a particular font and calculate how many lines, according to the width of the paper or column, will be taken up for any one project. The booklet includes tables for each font giving the number of lower case characters per line for the different sizes of the font. These tables and guidelines can be used for both ‘Monotype’ and ‘Monophoto’ machines.

Item 3: Hot-metal typesetting into the twenty-first century. 1983., 1983Add to your cart.
A booklet designed and printed by Robert Stockwell Limited, The Southwark Press, London. The cover is a Roma handmade paper, in a brown colour. The booklet is a catalogue of the type faces available at Robert Stockwell Limited in Monotype faces and Founders’ type together, with a list of the types of presses used. A foreword gives a brief history of typesetting, with some examples pictured, before providing information about Robert Stockwell Limited and their intention to carry on the tradition of letterpress printing.

A white covered booklet with a fairground mindreader’s chart pictured on the front. The booklet looks at the achievements of the company over the year with pictures of some of the designs created. These include the redesign of magazine covers, the Nursing Times and Nature Magazine, by David Hillman, the refurbishment of Unilever headquarters, London, by Theo Crosby, directional arrows for the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) and Mervyn Kurlansky’s designs for corporate packaging for firms such as Dulux. A compliments slip inside the back cover, dated May 1983 and headed Pentagram Annual Review 1983, identifies the booklet as Pentagram’s second annual review, while a list of Pentagram’s major clients appears on the inside flap of the cover.

A white covered booklet with an Oscar Wilde quotation printed on to the centre of its front. The booklet looks at the achievements of the company over the year with pictures of some of the designs created. These include the design of annual reports for The News Corporation, Lucas Industries and others, Theo Crosby’s involvement in the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre and the design of corporate calendars, including ones for John Player Special and the Commercial Bank of Kuwait. A letter inside the front cover, dated April 1982 and headed Pentagram Annual Review for 1981, identifies this as Pentagram’s first annual review. A list of Pentagram’s major clients is printed on the inside flap of the back cover with a list of Pentagram staff appearing on the facing page.

A review of the important events at Pentagram during 1983/84 set out in an A3 size, magazine style, black and white publication. The events covered include the design of a pop-up book called 'The Facts of Life' by David Pelham, book jacket designs for Faber and Faber, Theo Crosby’s involvement with the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, the design of company annual reports and the involvement of Pentagram in several projects for the new IBM building in Paris. The front cover of the review advertises Pentagrams new clients while existing clients appear on the back cover with a list of Pentagram staff in London and New York just inside the back cover.

A booklet with a picture on the front cover of pages set out in a frame ready for printing. Following the introduction a different typeface is dealt with on each page. There are thirty examples. A description of the typeface, an example of how a block of text will look and a brief history of the typeface is provided for each one.

A black and white publication by the Society of Typographic Designers (STD) which gives an alphabetical list, together with addresses, of all members of the Society. The pictures are of some of their material and were selected by the members themselves. At the front of the book are introductory pieces by the Editor, the President and the Chairman of the Society. Angela Reeves was the Chairman of the Society of Typographic Designers in 1986 and as such has written the Introduction for this publication. At the back of the book is a piece about the Student Assessment Scheme run by the Society along with pictures of the work by students who achieved Licentiate membership of the Society in 1986.

A pamphlet promoting new publications that were/were to be soon available from Jack Werner Stauffacher of the Greenwood Press. Several of the titles have typography as their subject matter. The brochure is contained in a plastic rexel wallet along with an envelope marked Type90 Keepsake and a booklet titled Ornamented Types.

A booklet, produced by I.M. Imprint, advertising the chance to order, prior to publication, an edition called Ornamented Types which was to be available in the Spring of 1991. Inside the booklet is a Christmas card with ‘To wish you joy at Christmas’ on the front and a handwritten note reading ‘Angela – Happy New Year’ along with an apology for not being able to attend Angela’s party on the inside. The card is signed IM. The word Joy on the front of the card is in ornamented type. There is also a loose piece of paper which is the order form for the subscription to Ornamented Types.

Item 12: Type90 Keepsake, 1990Add to your cart.
An envelope, marked ‘Type90 Keepsake’ from Jack Werner Stauffacher, The Greenwood Press in San Francisco. It contains a sheet of paper printed with two odes, one in Latin and one in English. At the bottom left of the sheet are the words ‘300 copies printed on Mohawk Superfine paper, on the occasion of Type90, sponsored by Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), Oxford, England, 31 August to 4 September 1990. Odes HORACE, from a new translation by Michael Taylor, published by the Greenwood Press, San Francisco, California. Handset in Nicholas Kis types by Jack W. Stauffacher.’  Also in the envelope is a booklet entitled ‘A Letter to the Royal Society. John Evelyn'. Following an introduction is a reproduction of the letter John Evelyn wrote to the Royal Society about the damage done to his garden during the harsh winter of 1683-84. A paragraph inside the back cover notes that the booklet was given as a keepsake for participants at Type90 held at Oxford, 31st August to 4th September 1990. 1000 copies were printed.

A booklet, produced by Stevens Shanks and Sons Limited, that has a cream cover with 'SS' embossed on it. The booklet has a short introduction followed by a catalogue of the range of type faces and borders that Stevens Shanks and Sons can provide. Stuck on the inside of the front cover is a pamphlet showing two further type faces. Both the pamphlet and the booklet have the date 9/8/57 written on them in blue ink. On the back cover an Em Scale is printed.

The booklet defines how abbreviations, titles, headings, and names etc. should be printed and when to use hyphens etc. in the Architects Journal. Pages at the back of the booklet show how to mark corrections. Several additions and corrections have been added by someone with a blue ball point pen.

A leaflet which gives a brief resume of the life of Mikol?s T?tfalusi Kis, The Transylvania Phoenix, using several type faces. The leaflet was written and designed by Colin Banks as a keepsake for delegates to an unknown conference or exhibition. The cover is a repeated pattern of a phoenix in red and black. Written following a conference and exhibition at Debrecen University, April 1985.

Two prints of nudes, one on each side of a piece of paper. On one side is a print of ‘The Great American Nude, Number 2', 1961, by Tom Wesselmann from the Larry Aldrich Foundation. On the other side is an untitled print of a photograph, from Mr. and Mrs. John Spencer Fund, by E.J. Bellocq and dates from c. 1912.
