Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

A small, oblong, shaped piece of tracing paper decorated with a partial Union Jack design. The words ‘transporté avec sûreté par pour JAEGER’ are written, using blue and red lettering, on either side of a space for a logo.

Item 2: British European Airways - Fly it BEA Cargo, 1964-1965Add to your cart.
A sheet of tracing paper containing a design, drawn in pencil, for a card to request an information booklet from BEA (British European Airways). The title of the booklet is ‘Trade is in the air: an introduction to BEA Cargo’. All around the designs are printing instructions written by hand using a black pen and relating to the type of font, line spacing and line thickness. Angela worked at British European Airways from 1964-1965 as an Assistant Designer. During this time she designed print using the company's existing Design Standards Manual.

Item 3: British European Airways - Compliments slip and Letter heading, 1964-1965Add to your cart.
A large sheet of thin paper that has been folded in half and has had two smaller sheets of tracing paper mounted on it. The piece of tracing paper attached to the top half of the paper has the design for a BEA (British European Airways) compliments slip drawn on to it. The company logo, coloured in red, appears in the top centre with the company address aligned to the centre and printed in black below it.  A design for a letter headed sheet of paper is mounted on the lower half of the paper. The company logo, coloured in red, appears in the top right corner with the company address printed in black below it. The words ‘from the Chief Executive’ are written in red lettering, level with the first line of the address, on the left hand side of the design.  All around the designs are printing instructions written by hand using a black pen and relating to the type of font, line spacing and line thickness. Angela worked at British European Airways from 1964-1965 as an Assistant Designer. During this time she designed print using the company's existing Design Standards Manual.

The details will be valid from 1st November 1964. Two sheets of tracing paper stapled together and containing a design for both sides of a BEA (British European Airways) cabin baggage label. The company logo is shown on the top left hand side in red above the words ‘Cabin Baggage’ in black lettering. Instructions on the reverse side advise that the baggage is to be placed on the floor under the seat. All around the designs are printing instructions, written by hand using a black pen, and relating to the type of font, line spacing and line thickness. Three sheets of tracing paper containing the design for both sides of a Claim Form created for the Prudential Assurance Company Limited.  All around the designs are printing instructions, written by hand using a blue, black or red pen, and relating to the type of font, line spacing and line thickness. Blue green and red coloured dots, complete with a key, have also been used. ‘Redone 28 May 68’ is handwritten in pencil on the top sheet.
