Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

A buff coloured envelope containing a Mohawk Paper Mills Graphics Collection that features twelve prints of Ivan Chermayeff's work. The prints are enclosed in a portfolio with the name 'Chermayeff' embossed in gold along the bottom of the front flap. A print of Ivan Chermayeff's signature is showing through a cut out square above the name. The three flaps that enclose the prints contain information about Mr. Chermayeff and along the bottom inner flap the word MOHAWK has 'Graphics Collection' embossed in gold across it. The collection was put together to promote the new Mohawk Superfine and free copies were available from Mohawk paper distributors. Items AR/01/Gra/040/1 to AR/01/Gra/040/15 inclusive are all part of the portfolio collection. The remaining two items AR/01/Gra/040/16 and AR/01/Gra/040/17, the newspaper clippings, were packaged with the portfolio when it was received at the University.

Item 1: Ivan Chermayeff - Signature, 1984Add to your cart.
A poster sized sheet of cream card that is folded to form an A3 sized card. The signature of Ivan Chermayeff appears on the centre front of the card. Inside the card the words from a retrospective exhibition, ‘Ivan Chermayeff: Works and Process’ shown at the Addison Gallery of American Art, are reprinted. They are arranged under the headings Collecting and Assembling, Writing and Repeating, Cutting and Tearing and Punching and Dotting. A statement in the lower left hand corner of the inside of the card says ‘The pieces in this portfolio were reproduced by Mohawk Paper Mills in their series Mohawk Graphic Collections’.

An A5 sized card accompanying the Ivan Chermayeff Mohawk Graphics Collection. The front and back of the card have been printed with a mottled design using the colours brown and orange. An orange square in the centre front of the card has the words ‘Mohawk Production Notes Chermayeff Portfolio on Mohawk Superfine & Artemis’ printed in it in brown lettering. Inside the card the details of the paper used, the ink used and other production details are given for the collection.

An A4 sized sheet of thin card with the name Chermayeff printed in blue lettering up the left hand side of the page. The words ‘Graphics Collection’ are printed along the top of the page in green lettering. The text below is in black and gives a brief history of Ivan Chermayeff’s life and work. In the bottom right hand quarter of the page under the Heading ‘Superfine’ the reasons for choosing this type of paper for the collection. On the reverse of the page is a reproduced self portrait of Ivan Chermayeff in the form of a Polaroid collage.

The clipping contains a picture of a print by graphics designer Ivan Chermayeff entitled ‘Blonde Afro’ together with the list of contents of the newspaper. An article, by Rita Reif, on page twenty eight of the paper is about Ivan Chermayeff’s new art-print assemblages.

A newspaper clipping from the New York Times dated Sunday May 23rd 1999. The clipping is of an article entitled ‘Transforming found objects into art prints’ and was written by Rita Reif. In the article the way that Ivan Chermayeff assembles pieces of junk that he has found into designs that are scanned and then turned into prints is described. A picture of the Cone Editions art-print workshop where the assemblages are constructed is included in the article.
