Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series of design ephemera and memorabilia was collected by Angela Reeves, 1942-2008 and kindly donated by her family.

The collection contains works designed by Angela as well as ephemera and memorabilia relating to all aspects of graphic design collected by her.

Early drawings and sketches by Angela date back to her school and college days. A number of the drawings that she produced indicate that they were submitted as part of a portfolio for entrance to the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

Later designs reflect both her freelance work and that carried out while employed by companies such as British European Airways, the BBC, Royal Mail, New York University, Chermayeff and Geismar, Ilford and the Torin Corporation. Many publications relating to the industry were collected and retained by Angela over her life time and form part of this collection. These include pamphlets, booklets, annual reviews and promotional material published by Newell and Sorrel (Utopian Papers), Pentagram Design and the Wynkyn de Worde Society.

Also forming part of the collection are news stories, memorabilia and ephemera that relate to people and events that featured in Angela's life. The people include Marcel Breuer, Claes Oldenberg and F.H.K. Henrion while the events include the 1975 American bicentenial exhibition at the British Museum and the 1968 Mexican Olympics.

Collection Historical Note

Angela had a solid career in corporate graphic design and she kept pretty much everything from her career - from all her exercises at Foundation at Chelsea College , through most of her work at the London College of Printing in the early 60's. She then went straight into working for BEA and other corporate organisations, was self employed for some time, was president of the Design Research Unit, worked with Chermayeff and Geismar in New York 68 - 72; ran the BBC Educational books design section; worked for Royal Mail in stamp commissioning through the 80's and early 90's and then went back to New York to work on the design standards of the Smithsonian Museums again for Chermayeff and Geismar. She also worked a lot at Exeter and Brighton supporting design student portfolios.

A brown art folder containing one hundred and seventeen of Angela's drawings sketches and designs. Some of these pieces of work date back to her school days, indicated by the name, age and year that are hand written on several of them. Attached to the folder is a piece of card with 'Chelsea only '59-60 (?)' written in pencil on it.

The outlines of the women are defined using a black pen and the surroundings have been muted by colour washing with a pale mauvey colour. The picture is on a sheet of A3 white paper.

A large poster sized sheet of white paper folded in half with designs on both sides. The bottom half of the paper has mostly been divided into equal sized squares and each square contains a different pattern made up of thick pencilled lines. A larger square, in the centre left of the paper contains a similar design using inked or painted black lines. Angela has written the words ‘Angela Reeves 10th February Morning Work’ at the top left hand side of this half of the paper. The top half of the paper contains an abstract design using black lines which have been cut from a sheet of black paper and stuck on.
Condition: Several black paper lines coming unstuck.

A sheet of paper with a pencil drawing depicting a man seated on a chair. The same drawing appears on both sides of the paper with one being a much more finished drawing. On both sides the man has one hand loosely in his lap and the other hand resting on a table situated next to him. The more finished drawing shows a lot more definition and attention to detail. There is also a close-up of the man's features, to the left of the main picture and Angela has written her name and the date in the top right hand corner.
Condition: One small tear on the edge of the paper.

Item 5: Black squares on a white background, [1959-1960]Add to your cart.
A large poster sized sheet of paper folded in half with designs on both sides. The bottom half of the paper contains equal sized squares which in turn contain different designs made up of pencilled lines. Half of the squares appear to have been created using a ruler and a thin lead while the other half appear to have been drawn freehand using a thicker lead. Angela has written the words ‘February 24th Morning Work Angela Reeves’ at the bottom right hand side of this half of the paper. The top half of the paper shows more squares, of various sizes. This time the squares appear to have been drawn freehand using ink or black paint. ‘Angela Reeves Afternoon work’ is written in the top right hand corner of the paper.

A large poster sized sheet of paper containing squares of pencil, charcoal, ink or paint patterns. Some of these are annotated and appear to be the representation of the pattern left when an item is dipped in to a liquid and then pressed on to the paper. Countryside scenes are the topic of the other two drawings. One depicts a river flowing under a bridge in the foreground with trees dotting the flat grassy background. Crocuses growing at the foot of a tree are in the foreground of the remaining drawing with rolling countryside for the background. All of the sketches have been drawn using a black pen. The design was at one time mounted on to a piece of card, but has since become separated from it.
