Abstract

A collection of boxes donated by Andrew (Andy) Bell, who worked as a researcher and other positions for World in Action and later for BBC's Panorama. The boxes detail the investigations for various programs, and show how they assembled their features.

Acquisition Source: Long Term Loan from Andy Bell

Acquisition Method: Andy Bell was the producer on the Granada TV World in Action series and later producer and sometimes director of the BBC Panorama Series, rising to executive producer. These archives represent his personal work in several of his investigations.

An extensive collection of the Oxford Strumpet magazine which has its origins in the Student uprisings in Oxford during the 1970s and the occupation of the Indian Institute and exams buildings. This magazine focuses on many issues ranging from local issues to international topics, and makes its political ideology clear by questioning the Government's statements and changes. Topics covered include:

• Reports on other student marches and general student issues such as housing and grants

• Student involvement in politics

• Feminism

• Gay rights

• International communist movements/ manifestos: China, USSR etc

• Issues with pay and workers strikes

• International revolutionary Marxist movements: Ireland, Cuba, etc.

Includes some interesting pieces such as a remaining insert in No.3, No.9, No.13, No.18, No.28. Includes special editions.

The Oxford University occupation and other student protests in the UK

A small collection of documents detailing to how students in the UK protested against the university Governing bodies around the Oxford Student Union Occupation. Includes:

• Transcript of the University hearing after the Occupation of the Indian Institute including witness statements and actions but this is a limited document because it omits cross-examination questions. Detailed account of events within the building during the occupation.

• A folder which includes many interesting documents not only campaign pieces for movements and changes in Oxford University but also documents relating to Essex University issues and student pickets. Strong focus in all of the documents about the importance of activism for change.

Sub-series which focuses on Andrew Bells's extensive collection of publications which monitor far- right movements and covert state action in both French and English.

Box 1: Foreign Publications Covering the Far RightAdd to your cart.

Collection of various different foreign publications monitoring far right movement, this collection focuses on French publications. Includes:

• 2 editions of the Droit and Liberte

• 12 editions of the Le Monde Du Renseignement Biic. The Jan/Feb 1984 edition includes some handwritten notes on seperate sheets. Includes a letter about payment to Biic.

• 4 Bulletin Henri Curiel.

• Collection of newspaper cutouts both in English and French on the Henri Curiel affari

• 19 editions of Article 31

• Copies of quick guides into what action to be taken in the events of things like corrupt leadership, protective bodies etc. Lists procedures to take and contact details.

Also included in this box is some other related documents which are reports relating to the League of Human Rights Movement. One of these documents is a collaboration between the League of Human Rights and Henri Curiel on the extreme right threat and the response to these developments.

Box 2: Monitoring of State Intelligence AgenciesAdd to your cart.

A collection of documents which focus on covert actions being taken by various states in connection to far right movements. Includes:

• 5 State Research Bulletins (additionally one copy of a State Research Index for bulletins 1-7 which lists by subject matter). Bulletin 28 includes a pull out poster advertising for Warlords CIS report: the UK arms industry with details on the reverse to send off for a copy of the report.

• 3 copies of the CIA Briefing by the Agee and Hosenball Defence Committee titled: ‘alleged assassination plots involving foreign leaders’, ‘Jamaica Destabilised’ and ‘Covert Action: What Next?’. The Jamaica edition includes a news paper pullet out with a double page spread on ‘The CIA and the Unions’

• An extensive collection of 22 of Intelligence magazines and 24 Parapolitics pamphlets throughout the 1980s covering a variety of subject matter including: Significant international stories concerning the actions of intelligence agencies within events such as the Iran-Contra Affair, a regular bulletin of intelligence stories from around the world and foreign- language excerpts from organisations such as the Indian Ocean Newsletter.
